The beginnings of our club Southern United Hockey Club was founded in 2006 through the merger of 2 major hockey clubs in the Bayside and Kingston areas of Melbourne. Sandringham Hockey Club and Moorabbin Districts Hockey Club each had proud histories but decided to combine to offer a stronger more diverse club to hockey players in the South Eastern Metro region. Prior to this merger several clubs these clubs themselves were the product of mergers designed to serve the local hockey fraternity during the region’s growth (post world war two). Clubs such as Cheltenham, Bentleigh and Oakleigh Districts merged and evolved adapting to meet the needs of the local community. In 2005 the clubs joined forces in Under 15’s and 17’s to field teams in A grade so many top junior and new to hockey players could play in a grade to match their abilities. The merger process took two years to complete, and the above photo was taken on Round 1 2007 when our State League 1 men’s team played at home to Altona. This picture commemorates the founding of our club. To read more on Southern United’s past click here. Whilst the past is important our future will be what we all have a part in.
